Join the Fight For Hearts

Kelley and Lisa Peace found out about Shield-Bearer through a friend of the organization. They were impressed with the mission of rescuing broken marriages and struggling relationships. Personally knowing the struggles of some couples in their home church, they felt the need to take action.  In early 2007, Kelley and Lisa decided to become a Shield-Bearer my committing to a regular gift of $20 a month. Since their initial gift, they have personally funded all of the counseling services for 2 families who have no financial way to pay for counseling and do have insurance coverage.

Jill and Dan

Jill and Dan contacted our office around the same time that the Peace’s made their commitment. They were struggling with finances working part time jobs and going to school full time while trying to raise their toddler. Jill called distraught because their baby was out of control and their marriage was almost over. During the first session, Jill reported that she was pregnant but was not sure if Dan was the father as she had been unfaithful in the marriage.  Dan asked for an abortion.

Jill and Dan would never have been provided services in another office. Their contribution toward their care of $10 per session was a struggle, but they kept their commitment. Kelley and Lisa Peace’s gift was making it possible for their care.

Jill and Dan worked hard through their issues over several months. In the end, thanks to Kelley and Lisa Peace’s commitment to make a difference and the wonderful professional Shield-Bearer staff, Jill and Dan decided to keep the baby, recommitted to each other and their marriage, improved their parenting skills and put themselves on a better financial footing.

Stewardship

Shield-Bearer greatly values every donated dollar provided by partners in the mission.  The volunteer board of directors set organization strategic direction and policies for the highest levels of ethical fiscal management.  The board of directors approves the annual budget and meets monthly to review budget management.

In 2009, Shield-Bearer managed a budget of over $350,000 with about 90% spent on direct program expenses and around 10% on administration and fundraising.  The approved 2010 budget includes increased programs and services with a new counseling office in Tomball through a partnership with Tomagwa Health Care Ministries, serving more students in new school districts with Dating Violence Prevention and Strong Fathers Strong Families programs, and reaching a larger number of at risk youth with our relationship skills pregnancy prevention program.  A copy of the budget is in the attached 2009 Annual Report.
